What actually happened is that they got really selective with the projects they took and they also started to publish light novels by themselves and adapt those instead (such as Violet Evergarden) so they could earn most of the profits without the middle-men. Sadly, the director of the show did die on the arson attack (RIP) but he also directed Maid Dragon and that one got a new movie recently so I don't think it's a limiting factor
