the amount of original old and new video formats is nauseating, and even some web models have wildly switched between formats. many people "don't know what they're doing" when they're choosing a file format, which results in chaos on a collector's data storage.
i don't want to deal with idiotic formats / codecs like rm, ram, swf, flv, divx, 3gpp, asf, old mpeg, even mov, mkv, vob, etc.
i simply want to have a clean standardized media archive on a local server, that i can access directly with any PC (VLC-Player) or a bedside iPad (nPlayer).
mp4, h265, max 1920x1080 works perfectly and snappy for me over WiFi. no need for a stuttering 2GB 4k behemoth of a file just to watch some lovely boobs jiggle. :-)
yes, h265 is "mac-compatible" (platform independent) and "lossy", but with excellent image quality and a hefty data reduction.
my current python program is simply a front-end for ffmpeg. it lets me select a folder full of video files [screenshot], then loops through all the files sending the conversion commands to ffmpeg. the results will be stored in a new folder. it's work in progress, so maybe some day when worth it, i might consider publishing it. ;-)
(btw: you can let chatgpt create a similar python script in seconds and then optimize if for your needs.)
