From what I can see, head feather growth is based on self-worth and affected by external factors like public perception. Tessa's a weird case since she gets off to a low-self image so maybe this weirdly affects her feather somehow? It's an interesting gauge to her subconscious feelings since her outward bravado may belie and betray the state of her inner self and subsequently her feathers. In any case, let's say she does get the support and adoration to bolster her feathers, putting yourself out there is still no mean feat and so I suspect her feathers will further dip before any restoration, at a hunch. Maybe even Aika will get concerned about Tessa's wellbeing, instead directing any ire towards Saiya (thoroughly deserving of it) - but maybe not! Aika may surprise us by being a stone cold bitch and go mask-off as a villainess. Gotta say that this latest development has a much needed shot in the arm for the story. Excited for what's to become.

I like that the ear wing things are actually being focused on in these recent pages. I’ve always felt they were mostly never integrated well in OSC and were just an excuse for Kip to not draw ears, which isn’t a big deal (cause who really gives a shit, some shit is hard to draw I can understand it) but it always felt weird how they had almost no focus. Glad they’re getting some attention now though.

I think I figured out the pacing conundrum with One Serving Choice. The requirement of frequent humiliation episodes, represented by the world having a feathers mechanic, combined with the long running time, means that the character development has to go in relative circles with buildup then breakdown of characters' pride. Humiliation fans understand this and don't mind it but others might find it odd. I like to see embarrassing moments in my own stories but I typically restart with a new character after 1,2 or 3 instances because trying to re-embarass the same character over and over starts to not really work as a coherent story.

It’s not even that these events shouldn’t be happening, after all it is a drama. I’m personally finding the tension and release of good storytelling keeps falling flat. We have the slow build up where very little is happening but it’s setting up the exciting moments then we get to the release (in this case where Tessa turns up with dishevelled feathers) and it’s just rug pulled with all momentum gone.

This could have been an interesting dramatic moment in the story and for Kip's comics as a whole - someone losing all of their head feathers catastophically - but Kip ultimately got cold feet on the idea and it subsequently fizzled. This reminds me of The Vomit Scene That Never Was - the panels and pages devoted to Tessa's aftermath of the eating contest with Aika and how it blatantly was building up to an explosive crescendo which, again, just fizzled out and nothing came of it. Would the comic have been improved by such a gross-out scene or did I personally want to see Tessa spectacularly puking? Not necessarily, but it would have conveyed that it was meaningful to Kip and that in turn would be imparted to the reader. That ultimately he had decided to commit to it with his whole chest. The actual outcome was safer, sure, but it sure was a whimper instead of a bang. I don't know if it's just rushing through with ideas that are poorly realised and simply not thinking things through, or if Kip gets shouted down from external sources. Either way, the lack of meaningful conviction in the story just harms the story overall making it toothless and insipid. Authors shouldn't be compromising on their ideas - keep or cut. Halfway houses are the worst of both worlds and please no one.

The one upside of the latest developments is that with the cat truly out of the bag, it can mean that Tessa may simply not care about her rep and take a leaf out of Aika's book to freely self-indulge to her heart (and stomach's) content. If she's at rock bottom, might as well enjoy it. How this helps her going forward remains to be seen - we're very much on the "step 2: ????" leg on the road to prosperity.
