I get it. Here's the thing you might not have considered: it is an effective anti-spam measure. Can I turn R9K off? Yes. Does the server de-duplicate and re-use files by hash? Also yes. With R9K off, you could, effectively do what you want: re-post an image from an old thread on the board, to a new thread, and the server will still just serve the one file. This would ALSO mean: anyone who wants to spam and kill a thread could effectively so do: so long as they keep jumping IPs, they could post the same "HAHA EAT SHIT" image many, many times, over and over, without limit, because R9K would let each post go through, yes saving space on the server with de-dupe, but no longer gating the same image from being abused. It's unfortunate that in it's current state, R9K is whole board or nothing, I can't scope to thread-by-thread, but I'll look into it. Also, you can skirt around this issue *fairly* easily, by just converting the format of the image before uploading, though I understand on mobile that would be a pain. Anyway I understand the concern, but I hope that explains why it's this way right now.
